Over the past years, and especially during covid-19, it has been proven that workers don’t have to work full-time in an office to be productive and trustworthy. Companies and workers around the world have seized new business opportunities and taken the leap into the world of remote, hybrid and flexible work.

However, there are still many challenges that women in particular face along the way, such as career advancement and pay disparity. But what happens when women are able to unleash their knowledge and skills and are given the tools to drive change? In 2022, we partnered with a major IT and telecommunications company to launch our unique and end-to-end flexible workforce process – a program designed to give everyone the chance to be innovative, more productive, happier and healthier; including every motivated employee.

With the help of the Sharing Tribe experts, a major IT company is applying part-time work and job-sharing practices to increase the number of women in its workforce.

Learn about the flexible workforce – a way for companies to tap into the talent pools of skilled, diverse and motivated junior and senior talent in a society where burn-on and burn-out have become major challenges.

After considering the key needs and challenges of executives, middle managers, employees and human resources business partners, we applied a customized process to address and solve them. The three main pillars: Education, a community-driven matching platform, and group coaching and onboarding helped employees leverage the strengths of their part-time and job-sharing partnerships and become better together. It also helped their line managers save more time in people management and coordination, as employees were empowered and enabled to take and share more responsibility.

Our program has helped these diverse employees by providing them with an opportunity to develop and conceptualize how they work together. Martina (*), an expert in supply chain processes, now has a portfolio career within the same company, which means that she continues to work in her main role while spending one working day in a second team and SAP project to learn new skills, but also to push the mutual and necessary knowledge transfer and synergies between both teams. In the new SAP team, she is closely supported and trained by two experienced colleagues. The aim is for Martina to gradually increase her working days in the new team. Martin, a backend engineer, has shown the motivation to continue his education in data warehousing and data science and has now begun training his new teammate and sharing his work 50/50 to free up more time for his upskilling in the long run. Of course, all of these teams are supported by their direct supervisors.

Along the way, the main process has been standardized for general use. The Sharing Tribe team is now working on further developing a platform for other customers and prospects. The platform is intended to be an information and education hub, as well as a contact point to support employees and their teams as they navigate different phases and circumstances in their flexible working lives, and create a true connection between colleagues. It also highlights each company’s role as an employee-friendly employer and Sharing Tribe hopes that this will set an example for other companies to follow.

Get started today

Sharing Tribe helps businesses build an image of a valuable workplace. We know how to distinguish you so that in the eyes of the candidates your company is perceived as a space for the development of competencies and passions.

If you want to sustainably introduce and grow your flexible workforce, contact us today or click the link below to schedule a demo.

(*) Names changed

Photo by Timon Studler on Unsplash

Book a 30-minute consultation with the Sharing Tribe team and write to us at contact@sharingtribe.tech

On November 25th, 2022, we held our onsite event in a joint collaboration with WeCoCo community and their founder Patrycja Pielaszek.

Our topic was how to empower a flexible and productive workforce, focusing on job sharing as the key to achieving this goal.

1. Job Sharing enables companies to become more productive, flexible, diverse and innovative

It is proven that sharing knowledge, tasks, and responsibilities broadens the range of activities and lead to new ideas. Diversity drives innovation as Harvard Business Review wrote already in 2013.

Job sharing also brings numerous other benefits, such as up-skilling and re-skilling, as it provides built-in knowledge and skills sharing and coaching. Because the partners in a job share partnership hold each other accountable for performance through regular communication and handovers, there is also a much higher quality of deliverables and outcomes.

2. Employees need to be proactive.

It has to start with you! You need to proactively ask for more flexibility, and come up with real arguments in convincing your boss, your team and your stakeholders. We are happy to provide coaching and support to help you achieve this quickly.

3. Be the innovator and ignite the spark.

Start with mobilising people who want to support your cause and get involved. These people are engaged, they have a growth mindset and can volunteer as part of their work time. With them as allies, you can do some test projects on the side. Hence, you don’t have to have a real “assigned” project right away and pitch it to your boss or stakeholders “too soon.” It’s usually easier to start it in the background and get stakeholder approval after the initial results and successful use cases have been presented.

Don’t expect big milestones right at the beginning. When negotiating, start with the small things, be creative and innovative, and do things differently. Also, keep in mind the basic principles of change management, which are that no one wants to be changed quickly or completely. Therefore, have a vision, but don’t worry about the big milestones.

4. It’s not only about HR (Human Resources), and even the C-level executives.

Middle management and leadership needs to be educated and convinced as well. They need to regularly live the feedback culture and listen to their employees.

When talking about innovation, we all need to be open and have the growth mindset.

It was a wonderful event that we plan to repeat very soon. Until then, get ready for the Future of Work with us and follow us on LinkedIn and Instagram.

Do you need support with designing and implementing your Flexible Work strategy? We at Sharing Tribe are happy to help.

Book a 30-minute consultation with the Sharing Tribe team and write to us at contact@sharingtribe.tech

What do you think are the main advantages of job sharing besides achieving a work-life balance?

I believe complementing each other’s hard and soft skills and working closely together as a job-sharing couple together with the rest of the team (in this case: myself) is the way to reach mutual goals and learn and challenge each other. Our working relationship was built on confidence, trust and mutual understanding. Often we can be biased and favor people we know and have worked with, but usually, it helps when we are open to employing people from other departments and diverse sets of skills and backgrounds since they bring another fresh point of view. The personality and working style of the job-sharing couple also needs to be matched to the rest of the team.

Furthermore, making sure of who is taking care of the continuity of the job-sharing relationship is as important. Handling the workload and team management should be line managers’ responsibility as well, but it can also be delegated to HR or the job-sharing team itself.

Your last piece of advice, Laura?

I am now working as a part-time marketing consultant. However, I still support the job-share concept and would seriously consider that as an option. I enjoy working with others and I think it would add more support, consistency and professional interaction and comradery.

If you are unsure about how to approach a company yourself, join a community that is experienced in this working model, for instance, the Sharing Tribe’s community.
Recently I was fortunate to be introduced to Laura Miller, who had worked 5 years as a Product Manager at Gillette / Procter & Gamble in the United States. This was a job sharing position and we are extremely grateful that Laura was willing to share her job sharing experience and insights with Sharing Tribe and our community.

How were you introduced to the job-sharing model?

After taking maternity leave with my first baby, I wanted to go back to work in a position that matched my experience and skills, but also gave me enough flexibility and time for my family obligations. I needed a job that would be as fulfilling and challenging as the one I was used to.

I knew my working colleague from before and we already had a very successful working relationship and understood each other perfectly. As we were both in a similar situation, we decided to propose to our line managers a job-sharing opportunity where we would both share one full-time position. We mapped out the advantages of that approach and luckily, they were very open and had full confidence in us. Ultimately, we were a case-study for job sharing in our company! 🙂

That sounds like a great start. What were the main advantages of your job sharing partnership?

In addition to our shared product, marketing and business skills, we complemented each other’s soft skills and we found that working together on the same role meant we not only achieved but we actually collectively surpassed our goals. Our working relationship was built on confidence, trust and mutual understanding. Also, our working styles were quite similar and that helped us be very productive which meant there was a seamless approach.

What was your working approach?

We both worked three days a week. I was available between Monday and Wednesday and she was available between Wednesday and Friday. Therefore, Wednesday was our common working day where we would work together and share all the necessary information to ensure continuity.

By using a common email address, we were able to organize and secure our correspondence. Even if we occasionally received emails at our personal addresses, we would immediately forward them to our common address so that no information would be overlooked.

We also created a transition file with the most recent information on the status of various projects. The main goal of this was to help one person pick up where the other left off and it proved to be a very helpful tool for keeping us coordinated and organized.

What are your main lessons learned?

Identify a working partner with whom you can build confidence in that both you will invest the same commitment and energy, in other words both feel and take accountability.

Listen, communicate and rationalize decisions with data. If any difficulties do occur, or you find yourselves unable to jointly make a decision as you would in any work situation seek input from other team members or your supervisor for their opinion. Last but not least embrace it with a positive mindset and enjoy it.

Personally I had great fun and really enjoyed working together with my job-sharing partner and I can totally recommend it to everyone aiming for a sustainable career and work-life balance.

How would you pitch a job-sharing model to an employer?

For a 100% position, a company receives 120% of the resources which is considerably more than if one person does the role. This is because employees who work part-time in the job-sharing working model are generally a lot more productive, they schedule their holidays to ensure continuity, any private appointments are outside of work schedule which in real terms means less absentee, better holiday and illness coverage, which in the end results in more productivity and better value delivered to the overall team’s results.

What would you advise other employees that are interested in the job-sharing model?

Find an employer and line managers who know about job-sharing or are willing to listen to the advantages and/or willing to pilot it.

However if you are unsure about how to approach a company yourself join a community who is experienced in this working model for instance the Sharing Tribe’s community. Visit their online educational and networking events and mingle with like-minded people. The chances of getting to know your future job-sharing partner are great. You can also invite your friends and colleagues to join you. Their network is well connected to employers as well!

Thank you Laura for sharing your insights and experience. We wish you all the best in your private and professional endeavors.

We have seen that Laura’s Job Sharing story was a great triumph, not only for Laura and her work partner but also her team and employer. Their triumph was built on the job sharing key success factors which are identifying a perfect match, collaboration, communication, transparency, commitment and accountability.

We hope you enjoyed reading about Laura’s Job Sharing success story, if you are intrigued to learn more about the advantages of the job-sharing model then please join our community, post a free job ad on our platform or contact us to make an appointment.

I draw my inspiration from 20 years of hands-on experience in IT and a proven track record in software development, agile leadership, and product development. I’m an energetic, enthusiastic and optimistic person who seeks pragmatic solutions even in difficult situations.
Through the active engagement with diverse women in tech networks, I gathered lots of practical insights that I want to channel into a purposeful and meaningful future of the flexible workforce.

A month ago I’ve embarked on a journey to fulfill my long-lasting wish to become an entrepreneur. By joining the Founder’s Institute world’s largest pre-seed startup accelerator program, I know and feel I’m at the right place where I will learn, strive, grow, and ultimately succeed.

With my startup, I want to enable businesses and candidates in a job-sharing model.

My vision is in the building of a vibrant, supportive and learning community and fully digitizing the recruitment process for the part-time and job-sharing positions. Businesses get access to an untapped and flexible talent pool and start generating higher revenue thanks to increased innovation potential.

Candidates get access to job sharing positions, learn from each other and find a job-sharing partner for their dream position so they can build an efficient and long-lasting workforce.

I am currently focusing on customer development.
The research shows that by not experiencing a balanced gender diversity 20 % of qualified women in tech leave their jobs which leads to a dry labor market and women not exploiting their potential to the fullest.

Also, many tech companies can’t find enough qualified data scientists and they are usually searching for a “one size fits all” type of candidate that is very hard to find. They simply don’t know where and how to solve this problem.

Furthermore:

Unemployed qualified women in tech, e.g. data analytics, engineering, and data science, are not sure how and where to search for a part-time job.

Lots of tech companies plan to increase the current low percentage (often less than 10 or even less than 4 %) of female and gender diverse workforce in technical positions.

After I’ve validated the customer problems and assumptions and prioritized my work towards solving the most acute problem, I will start working on the first MVP (minimum viable product).

Thank you for your time,
